My husband and I are total foodies but when planning our trip to Iceland we had no idea how much of a foodie destination this would be. We had the opportunity to do a food tour in Reykjavik, Iceland with Wake Up Reykjavik Food Tour. This was a wonderful opportunity to try some local delicacies we wouldn’t normally try. If you need other ideas of what to do in Iceland, here is a 3 day Iceland itinerary.
1. Islenski Barinn Best Places to Eat Reykjavik Walking Food Tour
This is a popular restaurant for both locals and visitors. This was our first stop on our Reykjavik food tour where we had some lovely meat soup. They call it meat soup but I would call it a meat stew. Icelandic meat soup is a popular dish and is the perfect meal to warm you up on a cold winter day. This meat soup was made with lamb, potatoes, rice and some other vegetables. For the brave foodie, we had the opportunity to try the local fermented shark. It comes in a sealed container and for good reason. Upon opening the jar of fermented shark, you will get blown over by the aroma of ammonia. If you can initially get past the smell, your initial bite of fermented shark will have little to no taste. Give it a minute and the fermented shark will leave a foul taste in your mouth. I hope you saved some meat soup to wash down the shark! Yes, this doesn’t sound appealing at all but when in Iceland it is worth giving it a try.
2. Ostabúðin, The Cheese Shop Food Tour Reykjavik
Our next stop on the Reykjavik food tour was the gourmet Cheese Shop that offers a wide selection of cheeses and smoked meats. We tried some local Black Gouda, Gull Ostur, and Blue Cheese as well as smoked lamb, horse (yes, horse!), and goose. It was all delicious and my husband wanted to go back to buy some to take home.
3. Café Loki Reykjavik Food Tour

Rye bread ice cream
We continued on the Reykjavik food tour to our next stop for some unusually delicious rye bread ice cream at Cafe Loki. This ice cream is similar to chocolate chip ice cream – you would never know it is actually rye bread. Cafe Loki offers traditional Icelandic homemade dishes and is conveniently located by the famous tourist attraction Hallgrímskirkja church where you can get a spectacular view of the city.
4. Messinn Seafood Reykjavik Food Tour
The next stop on the Reykjavik food tour was Messinn Seafood Restaurant. You can’t visit Iceland without eating seafood – it is super fresh and delicious. We ate the most delicious Arctic char with honey, almonds, cherry tomatoes, lemon, and butter.
5. The hot dog stand Bæjarins bestu pulsur Reykjavik Food Tour
What? Hot dogs on a Reykjavik food tour? This isn’t just any hot dog – this is the famous Icelandic hot dog and best hot dog in Reykjavik. This hot dog stand has been here since 1937 and named the best hot dog stand in Europe. Icelanders will tell you that they have been visiting this hot dog stand since it’s opening. Make sure you order the original hot dog with everything on it that will include mustard, ketchup, remulaði (mayo based relish) regular onions and deep fried onions. It sounds like a weird combination but the deep fried onions make the hot dog. This will probably be one of the cheap places to eat in Reykjavik.
6. Skyr Reykjavik Food Tour
We tried some famous Skyr that is a thick Icelandic yogurt. Skyr has been part of the Icelandic diet for years. We tried both the regular and the blueberry flavored Skyr blueberry variety of skyr. To me, skyr tasted more like a thick yogurt, not cheese and it is delicious.
7. Apótek Kitchen and Bar Reykjavik Food Tour

Apricot chocolate mousse and a sorbet
Last but not least, we stopped for more dessert at Apotek. My husband and I actually dined here for their Sunday night roast and it was delicious. Apotek restaurant is located in an old pharmacy building, hence the name Apotek. Apricot chocolate mousse and a sorbet. This was the perfect ending to our food walk.
If you are planning a trip to Iceland and looking for the best places to eat in Reykjavik, then I highly recommend you sign up for the Reykjavik food tour with Wake Up Reykjavik on the first or second day of your arrival.
