Del Mar is a short 20-minute drive north of San Diego on the Southern California Coastline. It has been the destination of choice for movie stars as well as those who love the famous Del Mar racetrack. Del Mar is Spanish for “of the sea” or “by the sea,” which reflects its location on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. With its beautiful beaches, luxurious resorts, unique shops, and renowned restaurants it makes for a wonderful place to visit.
We decided to stay at L’Auberge Del Mar, A Destination Hotel that is located one block away from the beach. L’Auberge Del Mar Resort offers guests 120 deluxe guest rooms, including 7 luxurious suites, all offering village, garden and/or coastal views in a modern, beach cottage setting. When we arrived at L’Auberge Del Mar in California we were greeted by the valet who helped us unload our luggage and escort us to the front desk. As soon as we entered the front doors of the lobby we immediately got a glimpse of the blue waters of the beach in the horizon. Checking in was a breeze and we were escorted to our beach style room.
L’Auberge Del Mar, A Destination Hotel
L’Auberge Del Mar is located on the historic site of The Stratford Inn. The Inn was built in 1910 and was a hot spot for Hollywood celebrities looking for an escape. In 1985, a local resident, Jim Watkins, purchased the property and rebuilt the hotel and in 1989 it re-opened its doors as the beautiful L’Auberge Del Mar.
This coastal estate is right in the heart of the quaint beach Village of Del Mar in San Diego’s North County with a private pathway to the pristine beach of Del Mar and it overlooks the beautiful Pacific Coast.
L’Auberge Del Mar Suites
Each of L’Auberge’s newly renovated guest rooms features a stylish, coastal home vibe. I love the beach style furnishings in the rooms. We enjoyed watching the Southern California sunsets from the privacy of our balcony.
L’Auberge Del Mar Dining
The Coastline restaurant is a casual patio restaurant that offers daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner with ocean views.

Cycle the Coast
There is so much to see in California and what better way to explore the area than on a bike. We reserved an Electra Beach Cruiser and rode the Pacific Coast Highway and explored some of the local beaches.
Hiking Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve
The hotel offers shuttle service that takes you to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve where you can hike and see some of the most amazing views of the coastline. Down the road from our luxury resort is Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. Most of the trails are relatively easy to hike and it was a great way to start the morning.
Take special care to preserve the Reserve and keep it for now and forever. Please take note that in this Reserve:
- No food or drink, except water, is allowed in the Reserve above the beach. Food, of course, is fine on the beach (no alcohol).
- Dogs are not permitted anywhere.
- “Pack it in-pack it out” starting from the beach parking lot. There are no trash cans in the Upper Reserve. There are no trash cans along the beach. Trash and recycling bins or dumpsters are available in the beach parking lots.
- No smoking
L’Auberge Del Mar offers the perfect beach getaway for those who want to stay active and explore the beautiful coast or for those who simply want to sit back and relax by the pool.
This post is written in partnership with L’Auberge Del Mar. As always, opinions are my own. A huge thanks for a wonderful stay.
