Positano
The most famous and photographed city along the Amalfi Coast is Positano. It would come as a surprise if you were not exposed to multiple photos of its majestic buildings and awe-inducing views online at some point. However, it does not come as a surprise why there are so many photos of Positano circling the world wide web. Or why it is such a popular destination along the Amalfi Coast. The city of Positano is marvelous.
From the second you arrive, you will be blown away. Firstly, by the pastel buildings that are built vertically up the mountainside. Also by the deep blue waters that line the beach. And finally by the vast green mountains that extend in the distance. Positano is a city like no other that will leave you breathless.
Beyond admiring the beauty of the city, there is also quite a bit to do in Positano. One main thing to do in Positano is going to the famous Spiaggia Grande beach that is full of iconic orange umbrellas and always packed with people. The Spiaggia Grande is a great spot to have a relaxing beach day in the city while seeing Positano from a new angle. More so, this is also a great spot to go swimming and cool off from the summer sun.
Another popular thing to do in Positano is hiking the Path of God. This hike will provide you with some of the most beautiful views of Positano and the surrounding areas.

Sorrento
Sorrento is slightly less famous and touristy than Positano but is still stunning and exciting to visit. The fact that it is fewer tourists is actually a great thing. As a result, there are far fewer people roaming the streets, and visiting here feels more authentic and not commercialized.
What’s exciting and enticing about Sorrento is that it is built on top of jagged cliffs! These cliffs are quite high and have sharp drops into the water below. This coastal location makes Sorrento a unique city along the coast as the town looks like it could fall into the water at a moment’s notice. Sorrento is a beautiful city, and its looming location makes it even better.
Also, Sorrento is full of exciting things to do and see! This city is where the famous Italian limoncello was created and is now the primary producer and exporter of it in Italy. Therefore, if you want to taste the best limoncello that is fresh and straight from the creator’s source, this is the place to do so.
Sorrento also has a charming old town that is full of authentic clothing shops, art shops, and tons of gelato stores. It is delightful to walk around and explore these streets with no direction. Getting lost in this beautiful city is a privilege, and you may stumble across something pleasing.

Amalfi
Amalfi is one of the smaller cities along the Coast that does not get nearly enough recognition. This may be because the name of the town is the name of the whole coast, and this can get confusing to first-time travelers to the Amalfi Coast. But to clear the air, the coast is called Amalfi, and the city is also called Amalfi.
Despite the confusion and lack of recognition, Amalfi is stunning, and its quaint size makes it very easy to explore and enjoy thoroughly. The best part about Amalfi is its pier that extends into the Sea and provides some stunning views of the whole town. The dock is an excellent addition to the city to allow people to see the city from a new perspective.
More so, the inner city is extremely aesthetically pleasing with its white buildings and cobblestone streets. Taking some time to explore this city entirely is a must. They also have great gelato here, so grab a few scoops and get walking.
The city of Amalfi is located at Sea level and is a relatively flat city surrounded by towering mountains. But sitting right above Amalfi in the hills is the lovely Ravello.

Ravello
Ravello is a beautiful resort town that extends 365 meters above sea level. This city’s architecture is quite different than the others as it resembles13th-century Moorish-style while the other cities do not. The designs and architecture of Ravello are quite comparable to the architecture of ‘Dorne” from the famous Game of Thrones. If you are a GOT fan, this will be a fascinating city for you.
More so, Ravello is complete with lush gardens, iconic cliff-side terraces, and stunning stone walkways. It is one of the best cities along the Amalfi Coast for panoramic views of the sparkling blue water and the whole Sea from above.
As a result, the best thing to do here is to admire the stunning views. Walking on the terraces and taking in the beauty is magical. It is also possible to find a restaurant along the cliffs so you can dine while overlooking the coast.

Praiano
Praiano is the smallest city on this list but is one of the best. It is located between Positano and Amalfi and serves as a beautiful little town that is optimal for experiencing the local charm and authentic Italian vacation. The city has one beach and just a few blocks of buildings, and this makes it the perfect place to get away from the crowds of the other towns along the coast.
The beach is called Via Marina di Praia and is a small, pebbly beach that has some amazingly blue waters. More so, the two blocks of the city are charming. Praiano is the perfect city to stay in during your Amalfi adventures due to its prime location and since its less famous than the other cities.

Capri
Capri is an added Amalfi Coast city because it is not technically along the Amalfi Coast, but just a short distance from it on a secluded island. Despite the logistics, I believe it is part of the coast, and while visiting this Italian area, a boat ride to Capri is a must.
This island is a breathtaking location along the Coast that is both rugged and beautiful. Capri is best known as a hot spot for celebrities and the rich. It is full of designer shops, huge mansions, luxury hotels, and the whole island is surrounded by massive yachts. However, you do not have to be rich to go here! There are also tons to do and see while on a budget.
For one, the island of Capri is home to various caves and grottos that are amazing to explore. The most famous one is the Blue Grotto, which is a cave that has completely natural and unbelievably blue waters. More so, Capri has some charming streets that are beyond clean, and the architecture is immaculate.

How to get to the Amalfi Coast
The easiest way to get to the Amalfi Coast is to fly into Naples airport. For flights, I like to use Google Flights or Skyscanner to find the best deals on flights. These search engines compare millions of options from airlines and travel agents. Click here to find the best flight deal!
How do you see all the towns in the Amalfi Coast? I would recommend choosing one place such as Sorrento as your home base and then do day trips to each village. If you are flying into Naples then you can take the train from Naples to Sorrento. You can take a train or bus from Naples to Sorrento. We took the train from Rome to the Amalfi Coast.
How to get from Naples to Sorrento
The easiest way to go to the Amalfi Coast is via Naples airport. Here’s how to reach Sorrento from Naples:
- Private taxi pickup – If you want to avoid public transportation then the best way to get to Sorrento is to hire a private taxi pickup for a private transfer to Sorrento or anywhere along the Amalfi Coast. There are a number of local companies that offer private transfers. You can book your transfer here.
- Train – From Naples airport, you can take a taxi or a shuttle bus from the airport to the Napoli Garibaldi train station. Catch a shuttle bus or taxi from the airport and travel to Napoli Garibaldi station. Get on the regional Circumvesuviana train. The trains from Naples to Sorrento leave from the main station (Stazione Napoli Centrale on Piazza Garibaldi). They leave about every half-hour between 06:00 and 23:00 every day, and the train ride is approximately one hour. The cost is around $4 EUR
- Ferry. To get to Sorrento by ferry you will need to take a taxi or shuttle bus from the airport to Molo Beverello port in Naples and take the ferry to Sorrento. The ferry to Sorrento will take approximately 40 minutes and the cost is approximately 13 EUR.

There are many ways to get around the Amalfi Coast.
- Car Rental – You can rent a car, check for the best car rental rates here. By car, you can go wherever you want whenever you want. This type of freedom is very lovely, especially if you have a limited amount of time and want to make the most of the days you have.
- Public Transportation – You can also choose to travel around by public transportation. Travel by bus in the Amalfi coat is a more cost-effective option and one where you don’t have to worry about parking or driving along with the winding coast, which is made very close to the cliff edges.
